ATV Wheels and Tires FAQ's |
| |
How do I gauge the ply rating of my ATV tires?
On the sidewall of your ATV tire you will find star imprints. Each star equals 2-ply. For example: three stars on the sidewall of a tire means the tire is rated at 6-ply.
The ATV I purchased has tires rated at 2-ply. What's the benefit of installing tires rated at 6-ply?
If you end up riding in conditions that are difficult for your tires, use of a tire with a high ply rating, like a 6, is recommended. Take for instance: riding in course, uneven and rocky conditions, use a higher ply-rated tire to reduce the possibility of puncture.

It is suggested by the experts to always run the air pressure recommended by your particular vehicle’s manufacturer. Remember, the maximum air pressure posted on the sidewall of the tire is not always necessarily the pressure you should use.
Would it be best to replace my current tires with the same exact size, or is it okay to use larger tires?
If you decide to replace tires of different sizes, it is always best to check with the vehicle manufacturer. In general, you should be okay with minor changes, as with from a 20x10-9 to a 20x11-9. Although, is best to refer to the vehicle manufacturer to best ensure proper operation.
What causes air loss in my ATV tire?
There are some items you can check if you are experiencing air loss in your ATV tire. Firstly, check for cracks, punctures, and impact damage to the tread region and sidewall of the tire. Secondly, check the valve core and valve stem for leakage. An aged or damaged valve stem and a loose valve core can result in tire air loss.
Are there specific care instructions for my new tires?
Take care while becoming familiar with the new handling characteristics of your replacement tires. While braking, accelerating, and cornering, special care should be taken until you have become accustomed to your new tires.
What kind of maintenance do I need to perform on my vehicle’s tires?
The very most important maintenance detail you should perform on your all terrain vehicle is a constant check of tire pressure. Under-inflated tires might result in a whole scope of problems including pre-mature wear and tear, bad handling, fatigue, and/or side-wall cracking. It's also a very good idea to make visual inspections of the tires on a routine basis. Make sure to check for strange objects imbedded in the tread surface or sidewall.
What's the best way to get better mileage from my ATV tires?
There are some important riding habits that may help increase the longevity of your tires. Try to avoid fast starts and also panic stops. Be sure to check and maintain your tire air pressure on a continual basis.
